Discover the answer to weight problem in Omega-3
Maintaining a healthy body does not just mean having a toned physique and getting that flat abs instantly. Losing weight seems one popular health concern nowadays, but what most people do not realize is that there is a more important health concern that underlies that “gaining/losing weight issue”.
While most of us may think that eating less is the answer to overweight and obesity problems, we would be surprised to know that some dietary deficiencies could apparently be causing these health problems all this time. One of these is lack of Omega-3 fatty acids.
But it’s fat!
Yes, omega-3 is fat – an essential fat that is. Several studies that show significant beneficial effects of omega-e fatty acids intake have been published over the years. Omega-3 fatty acids are said to have anti-inflammatory effect, thereby could help in reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids also aid in lowering triglycerides level and in increasing high density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol in diabetics.
Why is there a need to prevent too much weight gain?
Whether or not we care about the food we take and how it would affect our health in general is really a matter of choice. Yet when we begin to feel the consequence of not watching over our diet, we run to our doctors for help, or sometimes to the gym, hoping that the unwanted outcome would go away.
Today, one of the greatest fears of everyone is to get fat or gain weight. Most people have this idea that weight gain or obesity is just a matter of being able to deal with the physical façade that other people see. Yes, it shows whenever you gain weight. Instead of flat abs, you have “flabs” or that one huge bulge in your belly. However, there is a need to consider as fact that there are people who may look fat, but are actually healthier than most of us.
So what’s the buzz with this obesity issue? Well, obesity may lead to more serious diseases. Your body is more prone to having cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and Type 2 diabetes if you are obese. In Europe, high rate of obesity is feared to cause an increase in the number of cancer cases among women. The link between obesity and cancer risk is calculated through a model designed by Andrew Renehan, a cancer expert and his colleagues. According to their calculation, 70,000 cancer cases out of 2 million may have been caused by being obese in 2002. In 2008, at least 124,000 cases have been estimated to be caused by obesity.
How omega-3 helps prevent obesity
An article in Ascentahealth.com discusses key points on how omega-3 prevents obesity based on several studies conducted with both human and animal models.
A study of 20 obese women was said to be conducted to compare effects of omega-3 diet, low-calorie diet or plain diet control for weight reduction. Though the examined group was small in size, a significant finding that “higher weight loss, a larger decrease in BMI [body mass index), and a significant decrease in hip circumference loss were seen in the group which [had an] omega-3 [diet].” Another study discussed had determined that omega-3 consumption “modulated satiety and led to feeling of fullness in overweight and obese [subjects] during weight loss.”
The article also discussed a study on obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice. The mice were said to have been fed by “a 30% fat diet with 8% fish oil for five months”. Their weight gain had been largely reduced after inducing omega-3 diet. In comparison with mice that were fed a 30% triacylglycerol (TG) diet without fish oil, the said diet showed no similar effect. Fat-breakdown in the mouse intestines was increased due to fish oil ingestion. This could be attributed to the amount of omega-3 contained in fish oil.
