Folate may reduce risk of certain cancers
For years, millions of people have been battling cancer, some survived it, and some did not. Health experts always tell us that eating fruits and vegetables may prevent us from acquiring such illnesses. There are epidemiological studies that show that folic acid (folate), that is usually contained in fruits and vegetables, is a significant factor in reducing the risk of certain cancers, including colorectal, cervical and even breast cancer.
There is a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that presents the association of higher folate intake with a reduced risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. The Malmo Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort study included a total of 11,699 women ages 50 years old. Assessment of daily dietary intakes which included nutrients such as “folate, [vitamins B-12 and B-6], riboflavin, dietary fiber, carotene and ascorbic acid” have been conducted.
Results show that “higher folate intake is associated with a lower breast cancer incidence” among postmenopausal women in this cohort. Also, their findings support the hypothesis that folate deficiency, on the other hand, may increase the risk of acquiring breast cancer.
According to this study, folate’s primary role is in DNA synthesis and repair. Changes in DNA associated with folate deficiency such as “elevated uracil incorporation to DNA and subsequent chromosome breaks” may lead to cancer.
The study also discusses the protective effect of folate against breast cancer in overweight women. High levels of insulin concentrations are found to be contributors to breast cancer risk among overweight women. According to the study, folate can [stabilize] and increase insulin sensitivity and lower insulin concentrations; thereby, making it possible to work as a protective barrier against breast cancer.
