Adults and Elderly are Drying Up!

Rheumatism, arthritis, impaired eyesight and memory loss are few conditions we normally associate with aging. Aside from more serious ones that may occur even earlier like chronic heart disease, diabetes and cancer, there is another age-related condition we often overlook – that is dehydration.

In a journal article entitled “Fluid and Electrolytes in the Aged”, Luckey and Parsa (2003) enumerated some changes in renal function and fluid electrolyte balance that comes with aging. Two of these are decrease in total body water and decrease in thirst mechanism. “Total body water decreases with age.” (Luckey and Parsa, 2003) In younger men, total body water is 60% to 65% of  bodymass. As one reaches the age of 60 to 80, total body water decreases to 50%. There is a considerable decrease in intracellular fluid volume that results from the reduced muscle mass in the body that is also associated with aging. As we age, muscle cells are replaced with fat cells which contain less water (Stotts and Deitrich, 2006). Also, clinical studies have stated that older people tend to thirst less though their dehydration level is high.

Researchers from Melbourne’s Howard Florey Institute made an effort to explain how this dehydration problem occurs in the elderly. Dr. Michael Farrell and his colleagues, A/Prof Gary Egan and Prof Derek Denton, found that a certain part of the brain is the one responsible for determining the amount of water a person needs. This part of the brain is called the mid cingulate cortex. Unfortunately, this region in the brain tends to malfunction as we age (Medical News Today, December 28, 2007).

If this dehydration problem still appears to be another minor health condition, one incident proves that dehydration is something that we should all be concerned about. In August 2003, there were more than 11,000 reported deaths in France. This was caused by a heat wave at the time. Many people died from dehydration and hyperthermia, most were elderly.

Indeed, this is one alarming health problem especially for the elderly. And the best way to prevent it, is to always replenish the fluids lost in our body.

How GreenCow Chia aids in hydration

The grains of GreenCow Chia are well known for its hydrophilic (attracted to water) properties. It can absorb up to nine times its weight in water. This ability of GreenCow Chia not only helps the overall hydration of the body. Balance of fluids and electrolytes is sustained in the hydration process. GreenCow Chia also promotes proper hydration of the colon, particularly. Hydration during the digestive process is maintained by GreenCow Chia, “irrigating” the colon as the seeds pass through it. This helps prevent colon cancer and diverticulitis. Having enough fluids in the body may also prevent the occurrence of falls, bladder cancer (among men) and constipation among the elderly (Stotts and Deitrich, 2003).

Many of the diseases we encounter as we get older are preventable diseases. One of these is dehydration. We can still avoid the more serious diseases that may be a consequence of not taking enough fluids. When water is not enough, GreenCow Chia is an ideal add-on to better promote proper hydration.
