Obesity could lead to “severe brain degeneration”, study finds

Obesity is commonly associated with serious medical conditions including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cancer. World Health Organization estimates an overall figure of 2.5 million deaths caused by overweight/obesity worldwide.

Often linked to cardiovascular diseases, a study shows that obesity may also cause brain degeneration. A recently posted article in LiveScience states that obese people have “8 percent less brain tissue” than those who are of normal weight. In addition, researchers say that those who are considered overweight have 4 percent less brain tissue than those who have leaner physiques.

The study which involved brain scans of 94 individuals in their 70’s, concludes that those who are obese and overweight had brains which look 16 and 8 years older, respectively, than the brains of leaner individuals. This then becomes very alarming especially because this unhealthy condition may lead to developing brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Eating healthy and keeping your weight under control may help reduce the risk of mental impairment that obesity may bring, says the researchers.

Men are more likely to experience mental decline than women

One more article talked about the risk of decreased cognitive function as found in another study. It included a total of 551 men and 872 women, evaluation of their test scores on mental performances as affected by obesity and high blood pressure and was conducted over a period of 18 years starting in 1948.

The research, which is published in the International Journal of Obesity, reports that obese men are found to be at higher risk of mental decline that obese women. The researchers say that this is due to the fact that men “tend to accumulate fat in their midsection rather than in other parts of the body.” They explain that some other studies suggest that “apple-shaped fat distribution” found in men may bring about health risks that are much higher that women, who on the other hand have “pear-shaped fat distribution.”

Whether or not it’s true that the high degree of risk depends on the type of fat distribution in the body, one thing is for sure: we can be at risk of brain degeneration if we are overweight or obese. And we are more at risk of other serious illnesses like diabetes and hypertension. As to the solution, we might as well start developing a healthy eating habit.
