Flu Alert: Spread of Swine Flu Virus
 The rapid spread of the influenza-like illness continues to threaten international health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of May 5, 2009, there are twenty one countries that are reported to have cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection.
Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of ordinary flu: fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. People infected with the virus also experience sore throat and nausea (CBC News, April 28, 2009).
The good news: Aside from the United States and Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, New Zealand and Spain, among others are countries that have reported cases (with no deaths) of swine influenza. The virus could be transmitted from pigs to humans, and now, with the virus reaching its fifth phase, human to human transmission may be possible. Though it seems that we are still safe from the virus, it is important to be prepared for a possible disease outbreak anytime. WHO says that swine flu could be pandemic, everyone is at risk.
