Climate change is perhaps one of the most talked about environmental issues today. It is associated with changes in temperature, precipitation and could alter weather patterns we used to have. This is obviously caused by human activities that are abusive to the environment. One important health implication of this occurrence is our capacity to adapt to extreme weather conditions and its influence on the transmission of various diseases. Aside from water-related disease like diarrhea, an increased level of transmission of vector-borne diseases are most likely to occur.
Climate change linked to dengue
It was in 1998 when the number of dengue cases was at its highest. That same year, the El Niño was one alarming phenomenon back to back with the upsurge of dengue virus. Experts and health officials find it significant to look into the connection between the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria and the changing climate.
“Changes in climate are likely to lengthen the transmission seasons of important vector-borne diseases, and to alter their geographic range, potentially bringing them to regions which lack either population immunity or a strong public health infrastructure.” - World Health Organization (Climate and health, Fact Sheet, July 2005)
Given the linkage between climate change and its likelihood to affect the spread of dengue and malaria viruses, it is evident that more and more people could be at risk of acquiring these diseases today. Anyone could be in great danger. Clearly, we are in a constant struggle to eliminate the cause of these viruses.
