Goji gives you reasons to drink more coffee every day!

In a 2007 article by Sabah Karimi posted in Associated Content, the author listed 13 reasons why we should drink more coffee every day.

Here they are:

Reason #1:  Improved hand-eye coordination. The author suggests that a cup of coffee will help you maintain your focus whether you’re doing two things at the same time.

Reason #2: Finish that tough workout. Keep your performance levels up by drinking one to two cups of coffee before your strenuous activity.

Reason #3: Makes you a safer driver. A long night drive will definitely tire out most drivers. So keeping awake and focused won’t be too easy, but if you drink coffee before hitting the road, you’ll be awake and alert ‘til you reach your destination.

Reason #4: Improved memory. Having a cup of coffee as you study or work can help keep your brain function actively and helps you keep focused and alert.

Reason #5: Prevents liver cancer. There have been studies that prove coffee to be associated with reducing the risk of liver cancer and even other forms of cancer. (Refer to study cited below.)

Reason #6: Reduces risk of Type 2 diabetes. Studies have reported significant link between coffee consumption and diabetes risk reduction. (Refer to study cited below.)

Reason #7: Contain antioxidants. One way to prevent cancer is to take foods high in antioxidants. Among the highest sources of antioxidants is coffee. Antioxidants reduce the effects of free radicals that trigger cancer in the body.

Reason #8: Improves job performance. Some jobs require extensive hours of work. Coffee may help workers keep up with the demands from their respective works without losing focus.

Reason #9: May reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. A lot of disease comes with aging. One of which is Alzheimer’s disease. There are a number of ways to prevent this, but one easy way would be to drink a cup of coffee or two every day to boost mental health. (Refer to study cited below.)

Reason #10: Headache relief. If you’re suffering from a horrible headache, coffee might be a good solution to ease the pain.

Reason #11: It’s a good mood booster. Get in the mood for work or study, or get that irritable feeling out of your system with the help of your favorite brew. Coffee is just the right drink to keep you relaxed or even cheery during the day.

Reason #12: Clearer thoughts. If you get easily distracted and seem to be out of focus most of the time, keep things going and improve concentration with the help of a cup of coffee.

Reason #13: Helps with your diet. Karimi’s article states that “caffeine is a natural appetites suppressant”. If you want to keep a “sugar-free diet”, take black coffee, one healthy alternative.

Here are some of the benefits of coffee that have been backed up by scientific studies:

Coffee improves memory. Students, or some professionals, often drink coffee to keep them awake during sleepless nights of reviews for exams and paper works; but did you know that it is caffeine in coffee that helps boost your brain function in the middle of the night? Caffeine is said to improve memory, and guess what, even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease!

A recently published study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease included “55 mice [that] were genetically altered to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease”, as reported by Ivanhoe Newswire. As the mice began to manifest symptoms of the disease, five cups of coffee were added daily to their drinking water. Results show that in a matter of two months, levels of beta amyloid of the mice were lowered by fifty percent. Beta amyloid is a “substance that contributes to the sticky clumps of plaques that are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Coffee reduces risk of liver cancer. Coffee contains high level of antioxidants. These antioxidants help protect the body from the effects of free radicals which are primarily the cause of cancers. There have been published studies that can confirm the positive effects of drinking coffee in relation to reducing the risks of certain cancers, including breast.

A large-scale population-based cohort study on the correlation of coffee intake and the reduced risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, commonly known as liver cancer was conducted in 1990. The study, published in the Journal of National Cancer Institute in 2005, included 90, 452 middle-aged and elderly Japanese men and women. After a 10-year follow up period, it was concluded that those who consume coffee almost every had lowered their risk of liver cancer by 51%. Results show that the risk of liver cancer to those who never drink coffee in this population was 547.2 cases per 100,000 people. The number of cases decreased by more than 50% (214.6 cases per day), over the same period of time as subjects drank coffee daily. Drinking coffee with 2-5 cups a day will further reduce the risk.

Coffee lowers risk of diabetes.

Karimi’s article says that a 2004 Finnish study confirms that coffee intake is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. Another study of this kind is published in Diabetes Care Journal in 2006 which included 88,259 U.S. women. Medical history and coffee consumption have been assessed. In the discussion, it has been said that higher coffee intake and higher caffeine intake can be independently linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. However, it has been mentioned that “higher caffeine intake was not substantially associated with risk of type 2 diabetes within categories of total coffee consumption.”

The study validates the assumption that moderate coffee intake, whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, may lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
