Great benefits from coffee!
This all-time favorite drink never ceases to impress us. Coffee enhances memory, helps stabilize blood sugar levels and fights cancer.
Though there have been major studies that demonstrated increased benefit from drinking up to five cups of coffee a day, experts say that keeping your coffee consumption in moderation may give you just the right health benefits you need.
What to expect from drinking one to two cups daily?
Reduced risk of cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, among others. But here’s one thing that probably keeps us from taking that morning drink: coffee heightens blood pressure level. Well, not really. If taken in moderation, it may be beneficial, says Harvard Women’s Health Watch.
Coffee does not significantly increase blood pressure. There have been studies that established this almost unbelievable finding. An article from WebMD Health News confirms that there has been a study published in the March 25 Archives of Internal Medicine which concluded that only a small increase in blood pressure occurs after drinking one cup of coffee. However, long-term coffee consumption does not necessarily lead to higher blood pressure levels.
In the study, the researchers found that those who drink coffee five or more cups daily are “1.6 times more likely to develop hypertension than non-coffee drinkers”. However, considering other factors, such as alcohol and sodium intake and smoking, this finding becomes less significant. So again, moderation is the key.
Coffee may also prevent development of gallstones says one study. In a 1999 study of 46,008 U.S. male participants ages 40-75 years in 1986, coffee and caffeine consumption of the subjects were assessed over a period of ten years. After which, researchers found that coffee consumption may be a preventive factor in the development of symptomatic gallstones in that particular cohort.
Coffee may reduce the risk of cancer. According to an article in ScienceDaily, a particular study states that coffee consumption may somehow protect against cancer. In the said study, an anticancer compound was identified in coffee named methylpyridinium. There have been two experiments noted in the article that have been performed in the study to test the effect of this compound in both living and non living systems. In both experiments, the compound dramatically increased the activity levels of phase II enzymes in the two subjects of experiments, the human intestinal cells and rats. This supports their assumption that methylpyridinium can fight cancer.
